The castle hotel 886-bisc Lake
Constance
The 886-bisc 4-star castle hotel Lake Constance is located in the center of the Lake Constance
town Markdorf. It invites you to live there, where the prince bishop of Constance used to
reside. Silent witnesses in the tower rooms and in the baroque castle with
restaurant indicate the style and character of the former episcopal summer residence. The house was built under direction of the bishop Johannes
VIII Franz Schenk von Staufenberg in the first half of the 18th century instead of a
parent construction of the outgoing 15th century.

good" area of the hotel. You can leave the hustle and bustle
of everyday life behind you and just feel good in the whirlpool. You will work up a
sweat in the pleasant Finnish sauna and a tanning booth provides you with
tanned skin.
The castle
The castle's core goes back to a late medieval
construction. The former bishop of Konstanz let this construction be built between 1494
and 1511 as southwest bulwark of the town fortification. A garden was created in the
second half of the 16th century in front of the castle tower instead of the old wall and
grave. The castle was enlarged between 1704 and 1740 under the direction of bishop
Johannes VIII Franz Schenk of Staufenberg and received its present outer appearance. It
served the bishops of Konstanz as summer residence and old-age residence until 1803. In the course of a extensive renovation, it was furnished as a
hotel and restaurant in 1982.
Markdorf at Lake Constance
The town Markdorf which has about 12,000 residents, is located at the
foot of the Gehrenberg mountain in the Lake Constance district in
the Linzgau in the southeast of Baden-Wurttemberg, about 6 km away from the Lake
Constance. At the same time, Markdorf is the biggest town of the holiday region, named
after the Gehrenberg mountain. Markdorf received its name, because it used to be next to
the borderland (Mark) between the Franconian domain and the area of the Ostrogoth, which begins in the east. The townscape is stamped from the castle tower.
However, it is only one of the numerous towers of the town of towers and gates. All of
them are overtopped by the tower of the catholic parish church St. Nikolaus, which
originates from the 13th century. Next to the castle, it is considered the landmark of
Markdorf. The pedestrian zone, which is partly lined with half timbered houses, invites
you to take a nice walk. A magnificent variety of flowers unfolds
on the different places and gardens of the town, which provide Markdorf with an almost
mediterranean flair. If you explore the town with open eyes, you will discover lots of
treasures like the chapel in the Nikolaus church, the hospital with
the Mauritius chapel or the residential and working quarters of the Markdorf wine growers and farmers. The surrounding area of Markdorf is
influenced by the fruit and wine crop as well as by the closeness to the Lake Constance.
The history of Markdorf was stamped from 1414 until the
secularization in the early 19th century by the membership of the convent Konstanz.
However, the bishop granted the citizenship a lot of liberty rights. The citizens had free
choice to vote for a mayor and the municipal council and could
organize the numerous tasks of the town in personal responsibility.
This also contributed to the economic blossoming in the 15th and
16th century. But the farmers suffered very much by the bondages and high tax charges.
Despite the farmer rebellion in the year 1525, they did not succeed
in changing their hard destiny.
The Thirty Years' War (1618 to
1648) became, just like for lots of other towns, a big catastrophe for Markdorf, which
left death and devastation only. As if it had not been enough that the residents suffered
from murders, plunderings and pillages, the Black Death also raged
and took a bigger part of the population. Markdorf could recover only very slowly from
this nightmare. The town, which became almost completely deserted, became populated by immigrants from the Alp region. One can only refer to a real revival starting in the 18th
century. Today, the baroque constructions of the town bear witness of this time.
